Engine Coolant Analysis

With continuously evolving engine design changes, cooling systems have to work harder than ever to protect systems against corrosion, buildup, and contamination. A major cause of equipment failure can be attributed to improperly functioning cooling systems, yet they can be the most overlooked component. Testing monitors the condition of the coolant to ensure proper cooling system operation. Just as is the case with engine oils, the coolant in your radiator - whether it is an extended life coolant (ELC) or a conventional coolant - can be exposed to contamination, coolant dilution, additive mixing, and oxidation due to extreme temperatures.

Laboratory testing removes all uncertainty, and regular testing allows you to closely monitor your cooling system. ALS Tribology offers a full suite of coolant testing, including:

  • Basic conventional and extended life coolant test packages
  • Corrosion, contaminants, and additive levels
  • ELC organic acid additives—cumulative additive concentration
  • ELC organic acid additives—individual additive levels in percent
  • Over 25 different test procedures for coolants

ALS Tribology offers breakthrough technology for extended life coolants (ELC). We use advanced liquid chromatography to obtain fast, inexpensive, but accurate results. While this technique is very similar to that used by coolant manufacturers and other research grade laboratories, ALS Tribology is the first lab to develop a method fast enough to be economically offered to any coolant user, yet still return accurate results suitable for reliable predictive maintenance programs.
